Bombardier, a well-established Canadian firm with international brand appeal, has come a long way since it revolutionized the world with its first ski-doos in 1942.

Today, it’s a global company with operations around the world, a competitor in the aerospace industry, and the number one provider of equipment and related services in the rail transportation sector. Bombardier’s rail business is wide-reaching, with more than 100,000 rail vehicles in more than 60 countries.

Bombardier’s trailblazing technology gave rise to the world’s first hybrid train, the AGC, which runs on diesel or electric power using two different voltages. This powerful and environment-sensitive train, which will run on the entire French rail network, went into operation in October 2007

NAFTA Promotes Vibrant Trade Relations

Taking advantage of duty-free access to the United States and Mexican borders for automotive parts, Bombardier exemplifies the vibrant trade relations that have developed since NAFTA came into force in 1994. The lifting of trade barriers has made it easier for Bombardier to operate across Canadian, United States and Mexican borders.

Bombardier was quick to adopt the global value chain model for its railcar operations. Its rail business maintains a multi-site manufacturing network in North America to handle its rolling stock production needs in the region. Operations are spread across four production sites, which serve both domestic and export markets. These include world-class facilities in Thunder Bay, Ontario, La Pocatière, Quebec and Sahagun, Mexico, where nearly 2,000 people are employed.

Final assembly for products entering the United States from these sites takes place at a fifth site in Plattsburgh, New York. Bombardier also operates a separate production facility outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which builds automated transit systems and people movers. Rail services—including fleet maintenance, equipment refurbishment and parts supply—also represent a fast-growing business line. Around the world, Bombardier maintains more than 8,000 rail vehicles for transit operators, making it the largest provider of third-party rail services in the world. Rail maintenance and customer service facilities are located at various core locations across the U.S. Worldwide, Bombardier maintains more than 40 production sites in 21 countries.

Bombardier’s first railcar order was for 423 metro vehicles for the city of Montreal in 1974. In 1982, the company secured its first major U.S. contract with an order from New York City Transit for 825 subway cars. It has since supplied about one third of the New York subway fleet, along with more than 1,000 electric commuter cars for the Long Island and MetroNorth railroads. In addition, Bombardier built Acela, the first and only high-speed train in North America for Amtrak, the U.S. national rail company.

Bombardier has also supplied more than 900 BiLevel commuter rail coaches to transit authorities in 13 North American cities, a light rail system to Minneapolis, Minnesota, a monorail system to Las Vegas, Nevada, as well as automated transit systems and people movers to 10 cities across the U.S. The company is currently building state-of-the-art stainless steel multilevel coaches for NJ TRANSIT, which will connect the state of New Jersey to the heart of Manhattan. Bombardier has also provided hundreds of stainless steel metro cars to Chicago and Toronto.
